Yesterday the world lost one of the good ones. I honestly can't stop crying. I'm so sad for Tag's family, I'm sad for his mama, and I'm sad that he was taken at 6.5 years old. I loved him like one of my own, and he passed so fast that it just doesn't seem real. Tag has been sick and slowly getting worse, but suddenly he got really bad, and then, he was gone. We were fortunate to spend part of the day with him, I was going over for supper, but Jo called me to come over early as some of his blood work results came back, and it wasn't good, I called Amanda to let her know and she was there in 10 minutes. We comforted Jo, we comforted Tag and we reminisced about the great times, and talked about his last days. Today we met for a walk and kept the memories going, great friends sure are amazing in times like these, and these situations can make those friendships even stronger, and keep those memories even closer to the heart.

He was a shining star in the Agility world, but most of all a LOVED family member who did everything with his family. He was a part of our close-knit agility family, as well as our extended family in real-life. Tag was our first student in our Puppy Teambuilding classes, he was a star at 4 months old. We used to call him Tag-alunatic ...that was soon relplaced with Tag-alicious. He was a dog who was all heart, and the bond he and Jolayne shared was the kind of bond most people only wish of having - and that bond came through in their Agility Career together, and most importantly everyday life. They accomplished amazing things together in a very short time, he was smart, tough as nails, brilliant dog. Over the past couple years he was our best travelling buddy going to Agility Trials. I loved his cuddles at night and his grumpy groans in the morning - he and Kaleb were hilarious together. Kaleb would try to kiss him ALL THE TIME ... and Tags "Mad teeth" were just not enough to EVER make him stop, EVER.

And then there was Gyp and Tag ... they loved eachother from the moment they set eyes on eachother. I am going to miss Gyp losing her mind at Agility when he running. Oh god, how I am going to miss that. Fuck this is so unfair for his family. Nobody else makes her soooo crazy, Tag brought out the best in her :) She would hear him inside the building warming up and would instantly lose her mind. Gyp gave Tag confidence with people, something Gyp learned from Kaleb. Gyp passed that confidence onto Tag, and Jo could often be seen walking them together. Thanks for the ride buddy, and thanks for being the dog you were, you made me a better trainer, and because of you I have an extended family that I never would have met it if I hadn't met you.

For the 5th year in a row, Kaleb is the #1 Flat-coated Retriever in Canada in AAC Agility!

He'll be 10 years old in a couple months, so who knows what this year will bring, but knock on wood he'll be healthy and sound as he has always been.

What a journey with this boy ... I lost count at title number 40, but I think it is past 50 now. Oh to reminisce about the good 'ol days when he would steal people's toys from their bags and f-off over a 4' fence and wait to see if I would give in - he was such a bastard, let's not forget about pissing on top the A-frame and while running across the dogwalk ... good-bye testicles. He is such a wonderful working dog, and I'm glad I haven't squashed his spirit in the process, it would have been really easy to do with such a "high-spirited" dog. Kaleb can be a difficult dog, ya he is happy and fun, and everyone sees that side of him, but he is a complicated mix of being sensitive and dominant and really FUCKING pushy. As long as he is convinced it's a game, a super fun game - and he plays them by my rules, and I'm consistent to a T ... he will give you %150 percent, any time, any place. More than any of my others dogs, I've learned patience, lost my patience, practiced patience again ... repeat until exhausted. I've also learned how my emotions effect a training session or even being in the ring. I had MAJOR nerve issues in Obedience with him, and do this day I still can't believe I got through his CDX without the help of prescriptions drugs or booze. I learned "I have to be my best, for him to be his best", and that is something I will carry though for the rest of my dogs, for the rest of life, in every venue I endeavor in.

Good job buddy, you're an ass, but I love you ... keep on runnin'

We've been taking advantage of this awesome winter weather, i hope I am not jinxing it by writing about it :) I have yet to wear my new gloves and toque I got for Christmas ... I'm sure winter will come ... but for now I'm enjoying being able to be outside and as much as I am in the summer months, hitting our usual trails in the coulees and in the 'hood with no ice or snow. No toque, no mitts, no boots ... no problem.

We've also been enjoying taking a few more herding lessons this winter (look no winter coat!) ... I hope it stays that way as we are both really enjoying it - I'm not sure who's head hurts more afterwards, mine or Gyp's. We are learning alot of new concepts, and the more I learn, the less I know ... but it is fun, and I like the challenge of learning this sheep game. And thankfully Gyp is patient with me ... and so are my instructors :)

Another highlight of my day was meeting little Alice :) she is a Don x Gin pup of Scott and Jenny's that I really wanted to steal, oh puppy breath, puppy fuzz and puppy butts! I've got puppy fever BAD!

Or "Bratty kid o' mine" ... that might have worked better. Well that's a wrap with Kaleb's 52 Weeks for Dogs Project! And like Gyp and Jane's last photo of 52 Weeks I wanted a mural in the photo ... this one is perfect, so much colour and creative expression everywhere ... pretty much sums Kaleb up. And the best part of the photo is the empty fireworks container at the site "redneck ruckus" ... how did they know Kaleb was coming?

What a year this boy had, I cannot believe he will be 10 years old soon ... i love my boy, even though he is a jack ass most of the time ;) - he is always ready to go, ready to please, ready to make me laugh - and cry, and ready to do things just a little differently than the rest of world - I think that is how we are alike the most. We see things slightly differently and not everyone gets it.

Well we made it!! When I made the decision to do 12 Months for Dogs Photo project with Jane, a large part of me didn't think she make it to the end of the project due to her failing health. I am sooo happy have these 12 months to show that she made it!

I thought this was a great photo to end the year - Jane STILL mooching for food, still with the sparkle in her eye, though her little body is much more frail that 12 months ago - she is still the same dog. Taken on Christmas day (yes, we have no snow - it was +12C that day!!!), our whole family went out to the Coulees for a walk - even Jane who was carried most of the way in her bag, she loved every second of it - and so did the family!

Thanks everyone for all the kind words and comments over the year, we are looking forward to 2012 ... whatever it may bring!

We had a great Christmas. One of the best in years. I think it is just because I took time to really think about what it means. For me that is Family, friends and being with the ones you love (oh and the sick amount of food ... that my guts are now paying for). It really has nothing do to with religion or a belief beyond loving the one's you are with and taking time to appreciate them more than normal.

We had an awesome Christmas day walk with the dogs and family. +12 Celcius and no snow made it possible for Jane to come along for the long walk in the Coulees (she was carried like a Queen in her bag for most of it) As sad as it is, none of us really expected to be spending Christmas with Jane, so it was even more special that she is still with us ... fighting the fight. She was soooo spoiled and so loved this Christmas.

I took a bunch of photos and I'll post them soon. It was a very special day.

Well that time of year is upon us ... the time of year when I give my guys downtime. I try to give them 2 - 3 big breaks a year. This big break will be 6 weeks off Agility training. I know when this time is coming ...

I might need a break if:

- If I start to train for the sake of training, and if I don't feel I am training anything specific. It is hard when we have Arena time, to just want to go and play around "do little things" - but really is it a benefit? Is it making them better, or me a better handler for them?

- If I end a training session and haven't gained or learned anything - I need to have a break.

- I feel my dogs have been working more than having off days

- If I have big events coming up and me and the dogs need some time to refocus and refresh

- If I feel I am losing desire ... I don't want that to rub off on the dogs in any venue we take part in, I need to give them my 150% all the time - and can anyone really do that 365 days a year?

Off time of Agility doesn't mean we become couch potatoes and do nothing. It is really a time to forget about "that other world" and spend time doing other things - maybe learn a new trick or two, refresh some other skills. Also, making sure their bodies have some recovery time from the various impacts of the sport and keeping fit. Keeping up on all of our conditioning (that includes me!) - Long walks, coulee runs, Jogging (me & the dogs) Treadmill (mostly the dogs and a little bit for me - I work while they exercise :)), strength-training (peanut ball, pods, body resistance - active stretching). They get their weekly massages - now a little deeper if they need it, and so I can find any potential areas that might need more attention (clearly from the above photo - they hate it) This is just what I do for me and my dogs - and it seems to really work for us.

Gyp is also on a 6 week break from Therapy work - again I think she needs a break from it - it's not something that is physically hard, but I do think it is mentally draining on her - she sleeps like a baby after her visits.

I am looking forward to 2012! 2011 started out a little rough, but it turned out to be a pretty great year.

She's Golden!

It was our last Agility Trial of the year, well actually day trial ... we ran 3 events. Gyp needed 2 more Standard Qs to earn her Gold Award of Merit in AAC and she did it in style - clocking the Fastest time in the event and he 2nd fastest time in the other Standard, she also brought home the most Gamble points. The Gold Award of Merit in AAC is when a dog earns 50 Masters Standard Qs and 100 Masters Games (out of Jumpers, Gamblers, Snooker, Steeplechase etc). I really loved the idea of earning this Award this year, but Gyp only ran in 4 Trials as she was out 7 months prior, so I was happy to have it happen whenever it came.

I Am very proud of her, and looking back on her trial year - though short, we had a great time. She won her 3rd Regional Championship in a row, her Challenge Title, and her Gold Award of Merit. I am looking forward to 2012 .. here's hoping for more good health and soundness!!

Kaleb ran too - he did awesome in his Gamble - only 7 Masters dogs got it, and he and Gyp were 2 of them. The boy can Gamble that is for sure! His standards were "enthusiastic" but not clean - I am very proud of him this year also. He tries his hardest out there for me, but I do see his age catching up with him - especially in the weave poles - he has slowed down in them and does not bend like he used too, we will take it as it comes, and keep up on his fitness and conditioning - he's been sound his whole life, so here's hoping for many more memorable runs in 2012.

And maybe, just maybe ... there will be a new fuzzy addition in 2012 ...

As you can see her belly looks big ... that is the fluid that builds up from the right side of her heart not pumping properly due to her Congestive Heart Failure. Each week she gets a procedure called Abdomencentisis performed ... she is a champ, such a trooper, never makes a peep and feels like a million bucks afterwards.

This past weekend was a busy one. Agility Seminar Friday with Lynda Orton-Hill - which was an amazing 4 hours I might add. More on that later ...

Saturday and Sunday, Gyppie and I ventured into the Obedience and Rally rings. One Obedience and one Rally each day. It was her Obedience Debut! Again, this is not the venue we are most confident in ... but we are trying our hardest to be confident. I could have gotten greedy and entered her in all 4 Obedience Trials in a small hope we could win High Aggregate Novice for the weekend (and I am not joking when I saw atleast 5 people asked me why I didn't - and only 3 times I was asked what Breed she was :) ) - but knowing me, and knowing my dog, I didn't want to risk losing the JOY in the ring, due to greed - I am learning both of our limits to maintain the enthusiasm I am getting and wanting to keep in this venue. I know from past experiences that Gyp often can get a little spooky as a weekend goes on - and sure enough she did. Saturday - she was totally confident. Sunday morning was quiet and there was random banging and echoing ... she does much better with lots of noise, so there is nothing for her to get spooked about. We played and played, and she bounced back with no problem, but it was work to get her back, and we had to be in the ring in 15 minutes!

On to the good stuff ... Gyp's first CD leg felt GREAT! She was upbeat and I loved every second with her in the ring. She earned a 194.5 and HIC!!! Her second time in the ring on the Sunday was almost as good - but a couple dumb handler errors (saying sit - um confused with Rally DUH and 2 points off for bad leash skills AGAIN in the Stand for Exam bad mama!) She ended up with a 189!!

She was awesome in Rally earning her first 2 Advanced B legs with a 99 and a 98 under judge Judith Snowden. Both HIC's!

Gyp also raced in Scent Hurdle, she only did 2 races and did pretty good, and was just getting in her groove - she was very enthusiastic - can't beat that! It was too bad there weren't more opportunities to race her that night, but oh well, maybe next time more teams will be there and she can run a bit more. I think she got her Scent Hurdle title, but I am not sure. No Nonscents did really good, and it was a fun relaxed race! I was in my PJs by 8, glass of wine, good movie and 3 dogs snuggling with me :)

And possibly the cutest part of the weekend was Gyp got to be a show dog - I'm not shitting you! She was asked by a friend who was one of the Junior Handler organizers if I would be interested in having her show with a Junior, since she is so good with Kids - the girl was about 11 years old. The girl just LOVED Gyp and had so much fun "training her" for the show ring - Standing and Trotting around, Gyp LOVED her too and didn't even look back at me when they trotted away to go practice. The dog didn't have to be a show dog, but had to be entered in either Obedience or Conformation to take part - since they are judging the kid and not the dog entirely :) I brushed her, got a friend to put a show lead on her, and they were off! I felt like a doting mama who's kid went off to College for the first time. It was adorable to see Gyp pretending to be a Show Dog - she took in all in stride - let the judge see her teeth, did her stacking, and down and back, didn't miss a beat ...

One of these things is not like the others ...

i wanted to get a photo of K at Agility this year... we are now back inside training his favourite game. This weekend we were at a Trial and he ran GREAT! So did Gyp :) :) :) She had the most Gamble points each day, and had the fastest Standard Run on Saturday! Kaleb is coming up 10 and he still runs with the same oooomph he did as a young guy - he earned his 60th Standard and 2 Gambles this weekend . His times haven't slowed down hardly at all ...

He was waiting his turn ... I love his pleading look and the action in the background! He is such a fun dog, and always keeps me on my toes. Love this crazy old man.

It's true ... Kaleb is getting old, and I am dealing relatively well with that reality. But you'd probably never guess he's coming up 10 years old. And he would never let you believe it.

I am very lucky that he has never (knock on wood ... hey K can I use your head?) been lame or off with an injury considering how much he does and the fact that he gives 'er no matter what.

Like any athlete, he gets very good pre and post care when he is going to be using that body of his for things nature intended (running, hunting, breaking through thick brush to hunt birds, swimming) and the things nature didn't intend (weave poles, jumping, climbing and decending the A-frame, slamming into me when he should be watching where the HELL he is going). He has gotten his share of chiro adjustments, massage, acupuncture over the years for maintenance, to keep him fit, limber and sound.

We have magic potion that seems to do the trick (again this is just for him coming up 10 years old, and it works) ...

General Conditioning

... for him at almost 10 years of age, it looks something like this ....He jogs on the "Tready" as we call it usually twice a week for 20min at a fairly good incline at fully extended trot, Peanut ball 2x week, stretching, massage, walks daily and jogging with me, swimming in the summer, a couple free runs a week and Agility training is in there too - but that is a minor part of his actual general conditioning. Agility is not his main source of exercise. We train really very little, and if the only exertion he got was on equipment, I don't think he would be very fit at all, seeing as we train for maybe 30-45 minutes a couple times a week. And that is over a few 2-3 minute sessions.

Supplements

Kaleb takes CoQ10, Salmon Oil, and a joint supplement daily, yum yum. To prep for an event (hunting, agility) we start with Traumeel - a homeopathic anti-inflammatory a couple days before, during and after an event. This really seems to help with recovery, he hunted once this year without anything, and Pete even noticed he was more stiff the next day, when he hadn't been on it. He hunted for 3 hours straight on Sunday, and I prepped him for it - not stiff at all today, in fact he is annoying me with his antics!!

His Magic Cape

Next we have the Back on Track coat. I have been using this for a couple years now, and I really believe in these products. I use one myself for my knee. Kaleb wears it pre and post event and often in between runs at a trial for different periods of time. If you aren't familiar with them - look into it!

And his favourite thing of all ... Mama's Magical Massage.

Now that I have somewhat of an idea of what I am looking for when massaging, and massaging my dogs on a regular basis really keys me in to their bodies, I really find I can make a difference with his well-being. For those of you who REALLY know Kaleb, I will have you know I can relax him into a deep snore with massage. If that doesn't tell you it feels good, I don't know what does! He has a couple trouble spots I keep an eye on and make sure that those areas get extra attention, before and after he givs 'er in what ever it is he is doing, to prevent a possible pulled muscle or having that issue lead to compensation in other areas - again it's about prevention. It is really cool to see him loosen right up and the recovery time afterwards seems to be better because of that too.

Another weekend of Agility is behind us. I travelled up to Calgary Friday, had a herding lesson, taught 6 hours of Agility ... it was a gooooood day!

The pooches ran in 6 classes and they were great. It was the first indoor trial of the fall season - and the footing was sure different than what we were used too over the summer running in grass - very loose deep mix and my guys popped out of weaves, and also got stuck in the deep surface while weaving - interesting ... but anyway, they were great, and super fun challenging courses. I really pushed myself and I had the best time doing it. Gyp and Kaleb are so different - like almost a different species ... but I love running them equally ... it's hard to explain, but I love them both for their little quirks and unique personalities :)

Our group did so amazing, the more we all hang out, the more like family we are. It is really awesome. We all had a good group cry session over the loss of one of our own, Sniper. He will be missed, a great dog, taken too young. We are such a tight knit group, it is so nice to celebrate achievements with them, and when you need a shoulder to cry everyone is right there for you too. I've never been involved in such a cool group of unique and diverse people, and I am proud to call of them my friends - and their dogs are like extensions of my own.

Enough of the sappy stuff ... here are a couple runs from the weekend ... and for the record ... Gyp's Tug Toy still works just fine.

Certified Kid Friendly

I know for some people it isn't important to have a dog that is friendly with everyone - but for me, it is VERY important, my dogs are in public places alot, as well we have a large family that has people of all ages. Some dogs you have to work at it with ... others seem to come that way. My dogs are a combination of a bit of everything, but I am proud to say, they are pretty unflappable in just about any situation I put them in - while knowing their limitations - ie. not putting Jane with small Children and being careful with other dogs. But in situations like pubic places, busy parks, elevators, other peoples homes ... they are pretty good.

Gyp was very shy when I first got her, and quite afraid of men. She has always loved kids and is very gentle with them - and if they can throw a ball - she will fetch ... it's quite simple really.

This past weekend, we had the opportunity to Certify for Children Pet Therapy. You have to be Certified already in the program a year, which we are, and I thought it would be fun to work with kids - she loves the elderly, but kids, as you know have a different energy.

The tests we have done for both certifications, are rather stressful!!! They really do a good job of testing dogs temperaments and how they deal with stressful situations.

The tests inlcuded:

Ring around the Rosie: 10 people including kids, singing and holding hands while circling us, then they all fall down on the floor at the same time. Gyp was curious, and went up to each person individually to meet them ... funny girl.

Play time: Kids playing on the floor with Toys and a Stroller, laughing and being loud, once again Gyp went up and met them all and tried to entice them to play.

Running at the dog: one at a time the kids ran towards Gyp then fell on the ground laughing or screaming .... Gyp thought it was weird - but just sat at my side and by the last falling child, tried to get them to play with her when they were on the ground.

Meeting the dog: the kids came up to pet her one at a time - of course she was fine with that.

Mob: we stood in the room, and all of the kids and people swarmed her, talking and petting, laughing ... again she thought that was pretty cool - hey kid, throw me a toy.

So we look forward to our next level of Therapy Dog work ... we will see how much we like working with the Kids, it will be much different than hearing the fun stories of the elderly, but should be just as uplifting.

Last weekend we were in Medicine Hat for Agility. It was an awesome time. Gyp ran great, 6/6 and earned her Ex Silver Jumpers (25th Jumpers Q).

K and I had a few blips, but man oh man, he ran great in the +30 heat. He ran 4/6.

This weekend, Gyp went herding - two days in a row! She had a blast, I can see why it is so addictive - so challenging and FUN!

And miss Jane ... she continues to beat the odds, and suck up to the Vets with cupcakes shaped like her.

We had an awesome time in Kimberley BC this past weekend. By far one of the most enjoyable Agility Trials. Mountains, Camping, Friends, Wine, Agility ... oooooh ya baby!

First, I have to mention how proud I am of all my friends and students. So many titles, Qs and wonderful runs. Amanda and Wicca FINALLY got the last jumpers Q for their ATCHC! Dave and Pearl earned their ATCHC, Bronze and Silver too. Check out the GDG blog for all the details and photos.

Gyp and K were entered in 6 runs. Gyp was amazing, I am so thrilled to have her running fast with no issues - I can breath when I run her now, without worrying about hurting her. She smoked all of her runs and in 6 classes Qd in all of them, with the fastest times in 5 of the 6 events she was in. K was great too - the first day we had a couple communication issues EXAMPLE: i turn, kaleb finds the line for the next 60' and keeps going ... but hey he was having fun and running fast, and that is the main thing! Sunday we pulled it together and he Qd in all 3 classes and had a great day despite the CRAZY heat.

Here are some video highlights ... I finally feel like I have my Agility mojo back and it feels great. I love this sport, I love the people in it, and most of all I love my dogs. I had so much fun this past weekend ... I like to call it an Agility hangover, I swear it was ACTUALLY from the Agility ... :)

Take a hike, eh?

It was Pete's birthday this weekend, and we were going to go for a hike in the mountains, but decided to do our favourite city hike that we do usually every week or so. It is about 5km and covers lots of terrain, elevation and scenery. I don't usually take photos along the way during the hike, but it was fun and opened my eyes and made me really appreciate where we live ...

it's been one year this week, that Jane was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure. It seemed to happen so fast - though from what the internal specialst said a few months before - we knew it was coming given her high grade heart murmer. We just hoped it would be later in her life ... like when she was 24 and the oldest Terrier to ever live. She is getting weaker these days, but still enjoys the simple things in life.

For the past 5 months, she has been getting Abdomencentisis every 10 days (a belly tap, where her build up of fluid is drained from her abdomen - as her right side of the heart is not functioning properly and causes the fluid build-up). She is such a trooper, and stands here for the 20 minutes it takes to drain her. Never complains, never puts up a fuss. Happily leaves the table, and takes a treat from the Vet. And every 4 weeks we fill her plethora of meds ... we have a little party.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again. I love this f'ing little dog.

I want to travel with the Carnival.

We had an AWESOME time at Whoop-up Days ... 5 days, 11 shows and hundreds of kids licked by Kaleb. Gyp was hugged and petted by at least that many.

I think I want to travel with the Carnival and take the show on the road. How fun would that be ... Caramel Apples for Breakfast, mini-donuts for lunch, and pretzels and cotton candy for supper!!!

Lately I've been in a bit of a slump. I love training my dogs, I love agility, but it seems I haven't trialed forever - since regionals in June. Our Group hosted our annual trial this weekend, and it was awesome. Just what I needed. I have been scared to run Gyp full out and train too much with her ... and Kaleb isn't getting any younger, and I am always worried about him too. This weekend I let my guard down and just had fun with my dogs, I left the worry at home, life is too short to live in a bubble - bubble's aren't very fun, and they are lonely.

Kaleb was awesome this weekend - he ran 7/8 and was just GREAT!!! Gyp was wicked too. She rocked her times and had the fastest Steeplechase and Jumpers times in the events. She was 5/7 this weekend. I'm back ... cartwheels might become a regular thing ... I love my dogs, I love this sport and I love our group ... the best damn Agility peeps around.

Better late than never. I'd prefer never. thanks.

I know the saying better late than never has many positive connotations ... but when it comes to Kaleb, and his aging ... I'd rather have never. He had his "Geriatric" I HATE THAT WORD check-up yesterday for a few things I was concerned about.

I don't want him to get old.

I don't want to see grey hairs.

I don't want to see him sleeping more than he used too.

(OK actually it is kind of nice to have him more quiet in the house :) :)

I don't want to see his skin so flared up he is uncomfortable and on mega antibiotics to clear up his seasonal allergies which came REALLY late this year.

I don't want to see his vision not sharp as a tack as it once was.

I didn't want to find out he has cataracts forming.

I don't want to see a specialist regarding the mass forming on his eye ball.

I don't want to keep finding lumps.

I don't want to wait for results from having 3 lumps aspirated yesterday.

I don't want to admit he is 9.5 years old.

I thought he had found the fountain of youth, I thought he was invincible, but I guess he is a regular dog like all of the others.

I am Certifiable!

After 6 months of practicum and hours upon hours of studying and hands on experience ... I am now a Certified Canine Body Worker! The education continues, and I am by no means an expert. I do think I have a good natural feel and a good eye. Thanks to everyone who lent me your dogs to practice on, I have learned so much.

I see the benefits with my own dogs, as they usually get one full massage a week and/or usually 1 or 2 maintenance and/or recovery massages before and after an event. I am looking forward to continuing practicing and getting better, and most of all, helping dogs feel and perform better. Kaleb gets stiff after a heavy workout, with massage he recovers much better, and is ready to rock again. The dog is 9.5 and still going strong, still muscled and totally sound.

Gyp recovered from her Psoas injury, and I was proud that when she was first injured, I was able to identify the muscle groups that were protecting the area, and had an idea it could be Psoas based on that (my feel for Psoas group is not well developed as it is so deep) but I can tell the symptoms and the areas that tend to gaurd. I also learned a ton about rehabbing, conditioning and the massage complimented the whole process. I am still careful with her, but as you know, she is back better than ever.

Little jane benefits too ... she gets gentle relaxation massages, nothing too deep to increase too much blood flow, she loves it.

So what is a Body Worker? And how can I help?

Performance (athletes) Dogs

Dogs have been an integral part of human culture for all of their history. As our culture has changed, the role of canines has evolved to fit our modern lifestyles. There are three basic groups of athletic dogs, recreational, competitive, and working. Recreational athletes are dogs that chase squirrels, dig holes, play race and chase with their friends, swim, play ball and Frisbee, and/or hike with their owners. Competitive athletes participate in events such as conformation, obedience, tracking, agility, lure coursing, and fly ball. Working dogs are involved in service work with people who have disabilities or medical conditions, do search and rescue, police work, and farm work such as herding. It is important for these active dogs to be kept well conditioned and fit. They are more prone to repetitive stress conditions and injuries. Proper massage can aid in muscular recovery after an active day, reduce fatigue and stress, and increase muscle tone. Massage can be used before sporting events or exercise to warm muscles and prevent injuries. It is also an important component in treatment of injuries.

Increased Muscle Tone

In the wild, dogs are constantly on the move, running, jumping, stretching and as a result are usually maintain good muscle tone. In our domesticated situations, they are usually confined to an indoor situation and develop many of the problems that we do from being sedentary. Inactive dogs are prone to premature aging, stress and anxiety, weight gain, poor muscle tone, and serious medical conditions. Regular massage can decrease the effects of an inactive lifestyle by loosing tight, constricted muscles and increasing range of motion in joints.

Provide Comfort to Muscles Injuries

There are times you’ll be called in on an existing case under veterinarian supervision or as part of the rehabilitation process following an orthopedic type problem or actual muscle injury. After the appropriate time for healing, you find massage, stretching, and the proper exercise can help the process along by encouraging the scar tissue to lie down in better pattern. Reducing any amount of scar tissue as it adheres to healthy tissue can help restore the muscle to better returning function.

Evaluation and Assessment Benefits

When we work with a dog on a regular, systematic basis with massage, we become familiar with all aspects of their bodies. Sometimes owners are not aware of changes that occurred in their dogs until they are very serious. Swellings, lumps, masses can be found and diagnosed early. Problems such as hip, shoulder, or knee dysfunctions can be recognized in their early stages and properly treated with veterinary care and rehabilitation. The development of sensitive touch can allow the dog to “tell” you when something isn’t right.

Increase the Range of Motion

A dog that moves better is more efficient in his stride. There is less wear and tear on the joints, ligaments and tendons equating to a longer performance life.

Socialization

Socialization is one of the most important aspects of raising a dog. It teaches them to feel comfortable with people, other animals, in new and different situations. It lays the foundation which allow them learn new behaviors, be calm and relaxed, and to interact with their environment. Massage can be a important component in a young dog’s socialization training and can serve as a therapeutic tool for dogs who have been abused or didn’t receive proper socialization.

Adjunct to Other Treatments

Massage can be used in conjunction with other therapies in a rehab situation. It can used to enhance post-operative recovery, as a catalyst from sickness, as an adjunct in cases of shock and severe debility. It is also effective in the reduction of anxiety – whether from storms, trips to the vets and groomers or to a boarding facility. It can be used with pets that are grieving from the loss of another animal companion or owner.

Assess the Physical Condition

It’s easy to feel tight muscles on a dog especially when it’s unilateral. Subtle changes in texture, temperature and tension can be detected with the hands. Often subclinical issues are hard to recognize, but earlier detection can mean permanent damage is lessened.

Communication

Massage is a very effective tool for communicating with dog. Because they communicate on a non-verbal way, massage is a very effective way to deepen the bond between humans and dogs.

Seniors

As dogs age, they are more prone to muscle soreness and joint problems. Regular massage increases flexibility, range of motion, and warms and soothes achy muscles. Massage also gives older dogs more quality time and tenderness.

Massage is used along with conventional and complementary health care as well as proper training techniques enabling the dog to perform at an optimum level. By itself, it does not attempt to cure anything.

First off, I don't give a shit if you say something about me - as long as it is too my face and not behind my back. And for the record ... I also hate 2-facers, backstabbers and liars. Um hi my name is Sarah and I can see right through you. oh and P.S. we aren't in grade 6 anymore.

But whatever you do ... Don't say shit about my dogs (especially just to be a mean bully and to try and intimidate me). I can take constructive criticism - but just being a plain old bitch is not cool. Mama bear gets rather mad, well first she gets sad, discouraged then she gets mad - and eventually I try to laugh about it - but it still hurts. I need to learn to have a quick comeback for people like that and learn to call them on it, instead I tend to react to the bear spray and head for the hills and avoid confrontation. I suppose the mature way to react?? Not sure? But like any angry mama bear, one day I might just snap and chew off someones head.

Over the years I've had some very lovely things said to MY FACE (what do people say when it's not to face hmmm) ... About my dogs ... Here are a few gems ...

"there are way better Jack russells than Jane, xxxx is a better, nicer dog"

Says the person who heard about Jane getting attacked in the ring at Regionals "well I guess she got a taste of her own medicine"

Said to me at Nationals in Ottawa "if Kaleb can get the gamble, xxxx can" ... Sorry but your dog didn't get it ... Karmas' a bitch.

"See, now THAT is how you are supposed to do it with a Border Collie"

I am new to the sport of scent hurdle racing and Gyp is a total rookie (YES she is a seasoned agility dog - but this sport she is NEW) and we are still figuring the game out - I really enjoy it and so does Gyp. I don't want to feel like I am holding anyone back, and for part of the night I did. People are always surprised to find out she is a soft dog always looking for reassurance from me - they usually only see the one side of her (the CONFIDENT side) that I worked damn hard to get - its called trust and mutual respect (something human relationships seem to lack). The last statement was said to me during racing on Saturday night - our second race night EVER ... Are people really that awesome - people you thought were maybe even friends? It's been a couple days and I still have a bitter taste in my mouth. Hhhhm maybe some ice cream would help.

i love the long days of summer ... this was taken anout 9:15pm, just before the sun set behind the couless for the day.

We came to this spot for a nice long hike earlier in the day, and I knew I had to come back at the end of the day and capture the gorgeous light.

And could someone please tell me how my dog is 9.5? It really just hit me that he is getting closer to being 2 digits ... sunsets do that ... they make you think.

even when she sleeps, she's cute :) jane is doing pretty good these days (a miracle really), she even got to go fishing last week and spent the day running YES running and trotting around, followed by some ice cream the next day. It was amazing to see her having so much fun. She still visits the vet weekly for her abdomencentisis (draining the fluid that builds in her belly because of her Congestive Heart Failure), it's still costs a car payment a month to keep her going - but she is more than worth it, as she still loves all the things she always has enjoyed, we're still cherishing every moment ... even the sleepy ones.

Day 1 and 2

This past weekend, we spent 2 days redoing our Agility Equipment - not just a new coat of paint ... new wood, new welds, new paint. It is still not done which means another trip back to Jan & Dave's to finish it off, but man it will be AWESOME! Dave and Pete worked their butts off and Jan, Amanda and I were all covered in paint :) We had fun hanging out in between with everyone and Amanda and her gang too who were there and had some great food and laughs too, thanks to our awesome hosts :)

Day 3

Monday, Jolayne, Aislyn and I met up with our friend Ericka and took in a day of the Stampede ... watched some awesome Stockdoggin', went on the Ferris wheel and felt nauseous (WIMP) and ate some carnival food.

Day 4

My fam arrived Sunday night from Saskatoon, and we've been enjoying having them here too! We packed up on Tuesday and headed to Waterton. It was an awesome day, one I will remember forever, we got to take Jane - she is often left out of hikes now because she wanted walk more than a little jaunt, we also have to keep her out of the heat, and can't have her panting. The weather was wicked just warm enough, some clouds and hardly any wind.

I LOVE SUMMER. please don't end anytime soon, mmmK? thanks.

Here are a couple photos of "Miss #10" from her Scent Hurdle Debut on the weekend. I was very proud of her! She had never raced against another lane - or another team. She was a little perplexed at first, and waited for reassurance at the box from me, but she figured it out and did great!! She even got her first 10 points. We have a great Team, and I am proud to be a part of it - I can't wait to race again!! Well and by that I mean to stand there and watch my dog do all the work :)

This weekend Gyp made her CKC Agility debut - she had to run Novice courses which are super open, super short - and SUPER FUN!! We had a blast. She finished her Novice titles with all first placements and had the fastest times of all Novice dogs - she really isn't a Novice dog, and I know that ... but they all have to work their way through the ranks like anyone else. It was nice to run with no pressure at all, the courses hardly took any time to walk - just go out, enjoy my dog and have a blast with her!!!

Some highlights were her 7.5 YPS Jumpers with Weaves Course, the fact that my knee didn't hurt at all as I really didn't work that hard. Gyp also made her Scent Hurdle Debut and even came home with a few points - she is like a big dog now!!!!!!!! And the most fun was taking Amanda and Kim's challenge to run the last Novice Standard as a Gamble - what a blast!!!! Oh ya and I won the 50/50 draw at the end of the weekend - CHA CHING (well $40 ... but I'll take it!)

Kaleb also was entered. He ran 4 events and now that CKC has a Veterans Class he was able to jump 16" and finish his Excellent JWW title!! YAY!!! He also placed first in his 2 qualifying classes - with the second fastest times of all the Ex dogs if you can believe it!

It was a great weekend and our group did great, and the Kennel Club hosted a really nice friendly trial.

This post is from April 2009 and I thought I would share it - I was browsing through my blog and reminiscing about fun times with my dogs and I found I few things I forgot about!!! I thought I would share this post as it has been something we've been talking about lots in classes lately ... enjoy ...

Have any of you heard this?

But is that a bad thing that my dog does Agility because I ask? Of course she does Agility because I ask - I've never seen a dog teach itself to Weave or learn a 20/20 Contact have you? If you have, please give them my email address so I can have a littermate or be on a waiting list for a puppy in 5 years ....

I have seen dogs teach themselves to miss their contacts and break startlines, steal toysfrom other people's training bags (Kaleb), if they don't know they are doing anything wrong, why wreck a good thing? Do you think these dogs are doing it for "you" or for themselves, I've dealt with this with my own dogs too.

I don't think I would want a dog that only pleases itself and does everything because "it" wants too. Isn't that why we teach reward systems, value for rewards, not to mention impulse control and motivational games, so we can work as a Team? It's a great deal I would say! They don't come to us being bred to do Agility with the instincts to do weave poles, read arm changes and know verbal directional cues (again pass my name on if you know of some who do), so it pretty much all comes down to us "asking" them to do it.

I think the 'key' is how you 'ask', and followed by being 'appropriately thanked', then followed by wanting to do it again because the first time brought great rewards! I am not 'making' my dogs do Agility. Can you 'make' a Terrier to do anything for instance, really?

but "I", but "he", but "she" but, but, but ....
Rewind 14 years ... Grade 9, I was put in 'remedial' math, because based on my Grade 8 scores that is where I needed to be apparently. I hated math. I made excuses. I didn't try, I had no interest in it, at all, I was made to feel dumb. I counted the minutes until the class ended, well hey I was using math wasn't I? I preferred to use the skills I was good at, drawing horses in my math book.

Fastforward to Grade 10. Math class again, this time with the regular smart kids. But this time it was different, it was, dare I say enjoyable, I did my homework, and I understood what was being taught to me. I was thinking about this today and wondered what made the difference. For one it was my attitude, and more importantly, it was the teacher. You know what, that year I made the honour role, true my other four classes were, English, Art, Graphic Arts and Home-Ec, but hey, my Math mark didn't hold me back that much.

So on to Teachers .... they are the key. Or in this instance "We" are the key. I believe all my dogs enjoy training and learning, and they even like Obedience (could be like grade 9 math class if I let it be). My dogs each have their strengths and weaknesses in everything I do with them, some is based on natural ability, some is taught - but alot is based on what they can offer me and we work with that. Gyp and Kaleb could care less about Jane's cat toys, and Jane doesn't really care about bumpers, so I work with what makes them tick rather than trying to make them something they are not, and for me that has worked in training three very different dogs, breeds, personalities and drive levels. They are all successful in their own right, and have gone beyond a lot of things I ever thought possible.

The same things apply when I work with the BAD, NEGATIVE, or FEAR "issues" my dogs have or had (the difference in attitude between my grade 9 math class to my grade 10 class), I've made excuses, still make excuses, but it doesn't get me very far, so I TRY not too as much as possible, I try to use it as an opportunity.

• Don't dwell on the issues.
• DEAL with the issues, and get on with it.
• The issues DO NOT define my dog, or me.
• It is the GOOD that defines me or my dog.
• I don't let the past rule my future, or my dogs future.
• If you make excuses, you begin to define you or your dog based on that issue or issues.
• Excuses hold you back, and it makes it harder to move forward.
• Focus on the good, and let the rest fall into place.
• Work on the "issues" and the EASY stuff, becomes easier.

So that is all I have to say about that. Just some Monday morning ramblings of things that have been running around in my little brain, anyone have anything else to add??

Putting the Q before the work ...

You know ... like the old saying .. "putting the cart before the horse".

Amanda and I have been working on developing some new classes for our group after observing them for the past few months - the prep we do for classes is alot of work, we spend time of the phone, dinners and any other time we can trying to come up with clever ways to get our points across and have people be successful - and we look for ideas for US too!! And our jobs as coaches and instructors is to do that. We can't sit back and watch things fall apart and have people plateau and not know what to do. We don't do it with our own dogs - and our students are ultimately a reflection of us - to some extent ... we can't take all the glory, nor can we take responsibility for dogs blowing contacts, sniffing, getting bored - the handlers are responsible for maintaining criteria keeping it FUN and the rules they instill out side of class for the other 23 hours of the day.

We gave everyone a Goal sheet last night and wanted to see what people's goals were in the next 6 months. It was interesting to hear ... some people wanted to make sure their dog continues to have fun (and were looking for ways to do that), others wanted to speed up their dogs and themselves, and there were a couple who talked about a specific title they want. From a dog's point of view - I'm pretty sure I would want to be with the person who is more concerned about having fun (I'm a dog afterall, fun is my middle name), rather than being with the person who is mostly worried about the Q (what the hell is a Q anyway, I want my damn hotdog and I want to play with my mama!).

If we worry and obsess too much about the end result (the title or the Q) without putting in as much thought, effort, obsession and worry about how we want to actually get there - we are losing out on a big opportunity. If you do the work, train the dog, have fun with dog, and the dog has fun with YOU, be confident and put in 100% effort in all of the steps to get there - the Q's will come, they will come quicker than they did before, it's true, I've been there.

We asked about what motivates the dogs last night, and everyone brought out HUGE amounts of toys, treats etc... we got everyone to explain why and how they use their motivator. We told everyone to put away the low value motivators and only use the highest value one for the night. Only ONE person said "Are we supposed to be the biggest motivator?" OMG DING DING DING!!!!

If the dog isn't motivated to be with you ... they aren't going to be motivated to take the said "motivator" ... and they certainly aren't going to be motivated to run agility - and even less likely to be motivated to get that all important Q for "YOU"!!! Or on the flipside - the equipment itself becomes the main motivator - and that is a recipe for doom also. We had everyone play with their dog with only having the person being the motivator - it was hard for some people (and these are people who compete) - and others it was easier. If you can't keep you dog engaged with you for one minute with no Agility equipment and no treats - how are you going to keep them engaged on course?

I want my dogs to see running agility as a fun thing we do where mama runs around like an idiot. Here is a look inside Kaleb's head for a minute .. "Oh goodie, I'm out of my crate, which means it is MY time to play with MY mama!!! HAH Gyp, you are left behind!! Now I get to do my favourite obstacles and if I run really fast SQUIRREL ... oh right, it means mama gives me the reward I worked so hard for ... I get it even quicker - if I do it REALLY, REALLY fast!! Gimme, gimme mama - I'm gonna get you, run faster woman! SQUIRREL!! Oh right, I am chasing Mama!!"

And in the mind of Gyp "Mama, I hope you have your knee brace tightened and your shoe laces tied up, because I am going to do my best for you, because you always do your best for me. BARK BARK BARK. OMG Weaves ... Mama I love this, thanks for teaching me how to go really fast ... BARK BARK BARK .... OMG Jumps .... hurry up mama this is so much fun WEEEE! What?? We are done already? I want more!!! I want more mama and me time!!!"

So ... have you made your dog think Agility Obstacles are actually "Obstacles" ... or are they "Opportunities" for fun??

I always have alot to remember before we get to the startline ... and when we get there ... each dog requires something different from me - and my energy is also different with each of them.

I have quite a process to get in the game and pump me up - and get the dogs focused. Each dog has it's own playlist on my iPod - Kaleb's songs are much different that Gyp's. "You're a Jerk" by New Boyz for instance would be played during K's warm-up ... or perhaps "Time Bomb" by Rancid. Miss Gyp on the other hand warms up to more top 40 jams like Nicki Minaj "Moment 4 Life" and a little Lady Gaga "Born this Way" ... sometimes the Dixie chicks even make an iPod run.

It's all about getting into the zone ... and making kaleb fear for his life ... he loves to talk back to me, he makes me crazy and I love it. :)

I always let Gyp know how much she is loved. Her aura keeps me calm and zen-like.

NOTE: kissing kaleb on the top of head ends up with a fat lip and bloody nose. Been there, done that - we'll stick to playing "the claw" and keeping my face far away from his on the startline instead.

Teamwork Triumphs at Regionals ...

"Teamwork Triumphs" that was the Organizers theme of this years Regionals ... I suppose that was a good motto for me and my dogs as well as many others!! Our group was amazing, and my own dogs blew me away.

This was Gyp's first time back since her last trial in September and since being diagnosed with a psoas tear in November. Well I guess all the hardwork, patience, rehabbing, treatments and dedication payed off, because she ran great. I seriously didn't think we'd be running Regionals this year - it was a longshot. We took Susan Garrett's Recallers course this spring as well as concentrated on Rally Obedience as a way to stay connected and playing together - and I think that also played a big part into keeping our "Teamwork" strong while not doing Agility. Gyp had won the previous 2 years as 16" Specials Champion and knowing she had been off for so long, my goals were to have her stay sound, and just have fun with her, and enjoy every moment - not worry about the outcome - just smile and be happy with my little girlie. That's what I did, and on day one she placed 1st in all 3 of her classes - I was so happy, more than happy really. On Sunday placed 2nd - twice and we had an off course in her Standard (not sure where we placed in that one) - which rattled me - but I took it in stride and kept things in perspective "We're here together, the outcome doesn't matter" I had to keep thinking that. I was hoping for a top 5 placement, hoping we weren't too rusty together and could hold it together (meaning I hope I can do her justice with my handling).

And well ... Gyp made a great come back and went for the "three-peat" ... and for the third year in a row is the 16" specials Division Champion.

Let's not forget about Kaleb! He was awesome too :) He ran 5/6 clean runs and ran really well all weekend - despite the lure of the pond and ducks below the Agility rings ACK! I am so proud that he finished 2nd overall in his 16" DD Vet class. He just always pulls it together and works his best for me. I am so lucky to have such loving, fun dogs - I still can't believe the weekend results, I honestly was not expecting it - but I can say my mental game stayed strong and I stuck to my guns and tried not to get intimidated by the fact that I felt sort of out of practice and not in my normal conformable groove. Once I am in the zone and warming up my dogs 110% of my focus is on them and I forget about the rest of the world and everyone else in it. At that moment is just me and them - and that is the best feeling in the world ... it makes no matter what happens all worth it.

It's official. Gyp is running Regionals (so long as her re-check Thursday is good). So I am. So is Kaleb. I didn't think it would happen. I am very grateful - and very excited. I am feeling pretty good - not as prepared as I normally am - but I have to get over it and just as always ... giv'er and go for it. No holds barred.

We are going to have fun and love every damn second of it ...

So last night we had to take Jane to emergency - her belly had been getting bigger and by the end of day ballooned up - we were worried about her breathing - long story short, she was not doing well - she wouldn't drink, was woozy, and wouldn't take her meds. The fluid presses on her diaphram and causes her discomfort ... and having to wait until the next day to see our Vet was not an option, she was very restless ... so after hours Vet visit it was. They drained a large amount of fluid again from her - it is now a once a week occurrence - but it makes a huge difference - and she is amazing, she just stands there - not sedation, not a flinch, just takes it - it's like she knows it makes her feel better.

It's funny .. Pete made a good point as we left the clinic with a little dog who felt much better afterwards - and was taking treats, drank water, and exploring the vet clinic like she owned the place.

"It took us 3 weeks to decide on the lawn mower we wanted, and were trying to justify the cost and save a few bucks - should we even buy it, can we afford it? Then without thought or discussion, we drop more than what the lawnmower cost, without the blink of an eye and don't even feel bad about it."

That, my friends is unconditional love :)

6 weeks ago I wasn't sure I would be running in Regionals. I had to send in my entry not knowing - the entry closed only 4 weeks after my surgery - I also didn't know if I would be running Gyp. I am the type of person that if you tell me I can't do something, I will work 10x as hard to do it. It's just the way I roll ... ya living that way has it's flaws, but I just don't like to fail.

So here we are one week until Regionals ... I am running, I can easily get around a course - last weekend was awesome, it felt great to be running at the Agility trial. My knee is still healing but I can deal with it. It actually feels it's best when I am moving. Sitting around causes it to get stiff. Bar-knee will be accompanying me, and he is awesome.

The field that Regionals is being held on is the place where I first blew my knee playing rugby in College. I am not sure how I feel about that. Again - I feel like it is for a reason - I need to overcome my fear of something bad happening there, because it did before. I will be fine as long as Amanda doesn't wear a yellow striped Rugby shirt chasing me down the field trying to tackle me :)

Gyp is doing well, this whole month has been about getting back into Agility while maintaining her regular conditioning schedule, and making sure there are no flare-ups, and so far so good - I haven't been blogging about it, because well, shocking - but I don't blog about EVERYTHING. Somethings I like and NEED to keep to myself. We've been training, and she hasn't really missed a beat. I am lucky she is the kind of dog that does well with a break - and always keep a level head ... and she doesn't forget a thing - which in this case is good - but in the case of fishing rods, fly swatters, guitars and kites ... not so good, she also remembers those things as WIERD and scary as hell.

K is running great, and I am SOOOO looking forward to running him - it was one year ago, to almost the day that he Torsioned and we nearly lost him. So last regionals that was fresh in my mind - and everyone was asking about him - which was hard. I was also running with my new knee brace 5 months after I tore my ACL and Meniscus ... so I just have to keep thinking I was able to overcome that last year.

Now I just need to get my mental game in the right place this year, I work best under pressure, but I have a lot of work to do, to get in the right headspace ... right now the discouraging thoughts are still lingering "We haven't trialed since September" "Is she really ready?" "Will I remember how to run her?" "I don't want to hurt her" "Can my knee handle it?" "Will someone in a rubgy shirt chase me down the field to tackle me?"

I have a week to get my mind games under control, Kaleb is doing some light training ... and Gyp has one more check-up before the big event ...

And, well I bought some new shoes ... so that always makes me feel better .. and run faster :)

This weekend was my first weekend back since my surgery ... and well, I ran great (if I do say so myself), someone even commented on the fact that I was scary being back after 9 weeks ... I'm sure they meant that as a compliment :)

But someone ran even better than me ... Yep the K-man. I entered him in 6 runs and he rocked them all. 6 Qs and he even placed 1st in 3 of his classes!! His energy, speed and focus was great all weekend. He didn't get tired, he wasn't at all stiff - he was running as good as he ever has. He is 9 and sure as hell doesn't act it or look it ... and you have no idea how grateful I am for that. He's one of a kind, that's for sure :)

I've been doing the same conditioning plan (including massage) with him as I have been for Gyp for the last 6 months - and well, it is obviously paying off.

Product Test: Cranimals. APPROVED!

Last month a Rep. from Cranimals contacted me through my Blog and asked if I would be interested in trying out their product and doing a review. I had heard of Cranimals - but had not tried it. I looked into the product and company, and their products are great - and certified Organic as a bonus!

My dogs are on a large variety supplements - I swear it takes longer to prepare their meals than mine sometimes! I have used Cranberry powder for myself, and as well for the girl dogs when they had urinary tract issues. I didn't realize there was so much more to it! They also use Raspberry and Blueberry extracts in the products as supports for cats and dogs. Cranimals has all of the information on their website and facebook page.

We tried the VIBE formula: Cranberry, Vegetarian DHA Omega 3 and Spirulina (a green algae extract that helps with muscle damage through heavy exercise).

Kaleb and Gyp tested the product, and well I don't think we were able to see long term effects because the supply only lasted 2 weeks, I did notice some short term effects right away.

First off, Kaleb has a really sensitive stomach, and I am careful not to add too many things to his diet (especially since his torsion - but also because of his allergies). This product acts as a detoxifier, and the best thing I noticed in the short time using the product is that it didn't give him "the runs", and that is big - his poop was still in a solid form (sorry too much information??)! So what that tells me is the product is gentle on the tummy for dogs - which is a big deal for me. Kaleb can be a really yeasty dog - so I can see how using this product long term would help with that, so we are going to keep trying it and we hope to see some long-term positive effects.

Gyp also enjoyed it - I swear half her meals are supplements, so I wasn't sure what one more would do - but she gobbled it right up - and would even eat it plain out of my hand. I tried it too, and it was pretty palatable :)

Something OLD ...
6 months off of Agility, and Gyp didn't miss a beat on her Dogwalk last week YAY!! This week we are conquering even more in an effort to get her back!!

Something NEW ...This weekend Gyp was entered in her very first Rally Obedience Trial, She came home with 2 High in Classes, 3 Qs (score of 100, 95 and 96) and her very first CKC Title! "Rally Novice". She was pretty spooked in the building with the loud noises and especially our Male judge on Friday. But through lots of play and games outside the ring in atleast 15 sessions over 3 days ... she got more comfortable as the weekend went on, and by Sunday, was 100% normal Gyp - happy and nothing bothering her. It is hard working with a dog with fear issues, but through alot of diligence and patience with Gyp she is now able to recover faster and faster from meltdowns. Her want for nothing more than to please me, and through our special bond, it scares the outside world away when we step in the ring - it is GAME ON. I am so proud of her.

Today, she's 12! Happy birthday to my best teacher. Honestly I didn't think we would get to see this birthday. Every month we pick up her meds at the vet there is a small celebration (it helps ease the pain of the cost - but she is worth it 100 times over).

Today we plan on hitting the DQ drive-thru as we do every year, go to the park, sit on a bench and share the ice cream :) and we'll finish her fun outing by stopping off at her favourite pet stores so she can do some shoplifting.

Seriously, how adorable is she??

It's been 6 months since Gyp's Illospoas injury diagnosis. On Friday she had another treatment and was given a new 4 week conditioning plan - this time it includes Agility equipment!!! YIPPEE!! It's been through acupuncture, laser, chiro, massage, chinese herbs and mega conditioning that she is getting back!!

It's been a very cool learning experience into learning how much we ask our dogs to do - and making sure they are conditioned enough to do the job. Kaleb is 9 and has never been lame a day a in is life. He is massaged regularily and gets adjustments as needed too - but that's it. He has done a ton of agility, hunting, running etc. He is IRON DOG, and I think that is in part to his conditioning as well as his build for working.

But I have now have a new view on how important conditioning actually is, even thought I THOUGHT I was doing a good job as I know the benefit of it with myself also. I am not talking about 30 minute walks a couple times of day - that is the bare minimum and not considered any part of our conditioning plan - it is just a given. I also ALWAYS give my guys a day off a week of anything - just a casual walk in the 'hood. Now they get 2 days off a week. I am talking about challenging the dogs muscles and co-ordination with a variety of strength and endurance skills. I always did the peanut ball, jogging, hills, active ROM exercises etc ... but not to the extent I have been to get Gyp back, better than ever - we've added a few more things than what I've listed also. My Body worker course has been amazing also, I have learned so much and am getting a really good feel for my dogs and others too. I think that has been a HUGE benefit also.

Gyp has more muscle than she ever has had, it's amazing really. And it has payed off for Kaleb to. I THOUGHT my dogs were in good shape before ... but the difference now is pretty cool.

My dogs are my pets, but they are also athletes - and I think people need to have this mind set more, given what we ask them to do for us. I happily drive a 4 hour round trip for a 30 minute treatment ... but it is worth it and it has payed off. Dr. Devall has been amazing over this journey, I am so lucky to have her knowledge, honesty and encouragement ... she is now Auntie Veronica given the fact she is a big support for our family ...

Gyp and her "trainer" are focused and ready to go!

Kaleb didn't miss a beat given that he had 7 weeks of off equipment (because of my surgery). I did some proofing ... me sitting on the ground, taking a photo while I sent him through the poles, atta boy! I don't want to brag ... but I did some pretty good handling myself ... yep, front crossed, rear crossed and I ran pretty hard too. Oh ya! I'm back!!!

Kaleb LOVES little dogs. I can totally trust that he will not be an ass - as he can be with large dogs, especially males - growly, postury etc. Yes, I just admitted my dog isn't perfect!! OMG! He even loved Enzo - the little intact male, who doesn't know he has danglies, I am pretty sure.

THis weekend we hosted Easter for our fam, we had 14 people here for meals, and 8 staying at our place ... it was cozy and there was never a dull moment. I loved every minute of it. The guys drank over 200 beer - that alone is hilarious.

We found a channel called "bunnies in hd" it was a big hit...

Ya and poor Gyp ... When 2 of the bunnies hopped off screen she searched for them behind the tv ... Such a special little girlie ...

After 5 months on leash ... the beast has been unleashed!

We did about 10 recalls yesterday from 50 - 100', she LOVED it. I didn't let her run the in the main field, just on the path where the footing is flat and even. Her conditioning is going great, and she is looking stronger than ever.

As you can see she is a little happy about the whole thing ..

The buddies are reunited again!

Now if we could only figure out where the hell Kaleb is running too ...

It's been a journey trying to figure out the perfect meal for her Majesty. We've tried EVERYTHING. Jane never used to be picky - the dog would eat dirt literally. Her disease and the meds cause her to not be hungry, but we've worked around that! We tried everything from crappy canned food - HATED IT, good canned food - NOPE, different kibble - YUCK, I would feed her raw - as she loves it, but it is too hard for her to digest (takes too much energy) ... so one night Pete made Stew and that perked her interest .... so VOILA! We make her own Stew now - simple, pure, natural ingredients and full of ingredients that will help her maintain weight - Jane is a CARB FREAK ... what could be better? Lean beef, Carrots, Potatoes, Whole Wheat Pasta and some cauliflower. She has been eating this for 2 weeks now, and she eats faster than Gyp and Kaleb most meals now, she licks her bowl so clean it could go back in the cupboard.

Every Royal also needs an official portrait ... here is Jane's. Isn't it gorgeous? It takes me a lot to cry instantly, and I did when I saw this. It is perfect ... the details and the look in her eye are amazing. It was painted by Lisa (Zack's mom) a fellow blogger...Check out her blog and work.

This past weekend we participated in a Children's festival - our group was amazing!! So many cool tricks and skills from Disc, Obedience, Tricks, Carting, Rally, Freestyle and on and on!

Kaleb used his SAR skills to find coins on the ground, and we did something new and blindfolded him!! It was great! He must have licked a 100 faces that day :)

Just to start this post out right ...the BEST Air freshener EVAH!!!

I just want one week where everything is sunshine and lollipops, is that too much to ask? Probably, but I'm a dreamer.

3 Vet Visits this week for Jane - she had to have a Lasix injection for fluid build-up, and dropped half a pound in water weight, when I weighed her 48 hours later, CRAZY. She has had Diarrhea and vomiting bile for 3 days, so she is on some more Meds and getting a full blood panel to see how her kidneys and liver are functioning. It's been 7 months of HEAVY meds, and they will begin to take their toll on her little body - it's a catch 22 really. So best case scenario the recent sickness is unrelated. Worst case scenario - her organs are beginning to fail.

One large Shop bill for my Element and my books still need to be done.

But the good, is really good ... really, really good ...

I am doing 3-5km at the bike and getting more resistance each time. I am already feeling stronger, which is crazy. Lunges, squats, step-ups and lots of stretching everyday are already paying off. I'm feeling strong.

Gyp is doing great too ... AND SHE GOT HER CKC PEN #!!! Look out CKC ... here we come!!! I am sooooo excited to get in the Obedience ring with her, our possibilities are now endless!

Jane sold another photo - I was contacted by an Ad Agency in the US who wants to use a photo for packaging :) very exciting!!! She can pay for another month of meds!! YIPEE!!

I've been working on an AWESOME trick for K at the Children's festival ... could be historical, if it works LOL or a total disaster ...

And one more BIG surprise coming next week ... something I've been looking forward too, and only one other person in the world knows what I am talking about!!! How is that for cryptic (no I'm not preggers).

YAY! I was able to take the dogs for a walk today!! It wasn't nearly as long, and I wasn't going even half the speed I would normally do, but 30 minutes was pretty darn good considering where I was even a week ago!

Gyp still has to be on leash, so she doesn't step in areas that are too uneven and risk a set-back, but she is free to run around within the 26' radius :)

Do you ever get the feeling you are being followed??

Kaleb ... he just runs, and runs, and runs.

Where this 9 year old gets his boundless energy from, I'll never know.

It was so nice to get out with dogs today with Pete on his daily walk with the dogs. It was nice change of scenery from me watching the dogs on the Treadmill.

YAY! As long as I am feeling good, I'll be A-OK walking the dogs for short walks. It's easy going to the field and letting K run while Gyp is on leash, because I can focus on how and where I am walking, rather than having to walk both pooches and pay attention.

One more step in getting better!! YAY!!

p.s. Did I mention I am biking at the Gym again? Yippee!

We will be back, oh, yes, we will be back.

Gyp and I both got good news this week. Gyp has been off Agility for 5 months .. and while I've only been off for 3.5 weeks - it seems like 5 months, we both got good news from our various "professionals" that we can be bumping up what we are doing again. YIPPPEEEE!!!!

It's been kind of cool in this journey together. I am as dedicated to getting Gyp back %110 as I am myself. Both of these things keep me motivated to do the best I can for her, and me. I thought our bond couldn't be stronger, but I swear now it is.

We are both getting stronger each day. And while she is on the treadmilll, I do my work out, or work K - yep she can do the TM all by herself now without me jogging beside her, it is awesome.

When I put each dog on the TM, I do their stretches, ball work or Cavelleti's and work on our daily exersizes for the "Recaller's Course", which has been SUPER fun and educational, and the dogs love it, and it keeps all of us moving.

Oh, and Jane is there too - mooching for cookies.

We can get all of our conditioning/training done in about 1 hour - I am the master multi-tasker extraordinaire.

I am beginning to see the sunshine ... and I like it, I really like it.

i'm so ready for summer.

i met with my surgeon this week, and he said to "giv'er" OK maybe not in those words, but he said the remaining bruising should be gone in the next 3 weeks (it is still really tender). he was happy with how i was doing, and now i just have to practice walking normal. he said do as much as i can within limits if pain and swelling (nothing lateral and no jumping).

and good news i can start biking, and doing more physio. i am now doing squats, lunges and step ups everyday. yay!! i am hopeful in the next couple of weeks ill really start noticing a difference in my regained strength.

come on summer ... i'm ready to show my scars when i wear shorts!!

Mother nature has a sick sense of humour.

This past weekend we got a huge dump of snow. it wasn't that cold, just SNOWY! The dogs had a great time playing and rolling in it.

Half of it melted yesterday, so hopefully by Wednesday, it will be a distant memory. Here's hoping.

My friend Lynne was nice enough to take out my stitches this week - I was worried about getting them out, but being at friends house and having 2 lovely Vizslas to distract me, made things all better :)

I also started physio this week - well I have been doing real basic things for the last 2 weeks, but I am now doing more. Stretching 3x day and one time a day of Strengthening. And icing 20 min. after every time. I'll be strating back on my upper body and core workouts right away too. It's a pretty big commitment but I am determined to be strong.

Gyp is doing great too - so between the 2 of us, it's around 1.5 hours a day of strength training and stretching, but I am seeing results already with me - and she is also doing fantastic. We have also signed up for Susan Garrett's Brilliant Recall course - a great program for us to start back training together, and a great educational tool I will always have - I thought the timing was great (especially for when i get my invisible puppy)!! I'm excited to start, we've spend the last 3 days playing the Critical Core games :)

For something less gross looking than my knobby knees ... it's Jane - she has been feeling spunky and doing really well these days ... let's hope that continues, we still cherish every day with her, especially the good ones.

One of the most annoying things about this recovery, is not driving. On the upside I'm saving $50 a week in gas ... but I like to do what I want, when I want .... so I am hoping that with the help of Jane, Kaleb and Gyp, maybe we can get back to hitting the road? Though I'm not too sure where we'd go ... seeing as I can't go too far anyway.

Pete did take Jane and I for a fun outing yesterday to the Pet Store, Pharmacy, Gas Station, and grocery store. I know how Jane feels now when she has to wait in the car when I go into stores, it's sort of boring - but people watching is fun!

• This week I went for lunch with Liz, my first field trip in 9 days - it was nice to be among the living - tomorrow another field trip with Jane and Pete ... to the Pet Store!! How exciting :)

• I can go up and down the stairs, one leg at a time, while holding a glass of water, that my friends is what I call, awesome.

• I can get in the shower all by myself :)

• I can put the dogs on the Treadmill, while I do my physio - multi-tasking at it's finest.

• I can also put the dogs on the Treadmill while eating Caramel popcorn, drinking coffee and chatting with a friend who brought it over for me :) they are getting so good on the TM ... 20 mins 5 times a week now + Pete jogging and walking them everynight + strength work 5 times a week.

• I can do Gyp's caveletti's back and forth, while sitting on the ball doing my own core exercises

• I can now put Gyp on her peanut ball and do all the exercises, and balance her myself (not Kaleb yet, that requires my whole body and balance)

• Who knew I would miss housework so much .... I can Vacuum (the main level)! I can put the dishes away from the dishwasher! I can clean the bathroom! I can dust!

• Next week maybe I will conquer laundry ... nah, I think I will milk that one as long as I can.

Since Thursday, I have felt like someone was squeezing my head in a vice, stomping on it with a big boot, then spinning me around and punching me in the gut. Sounds fun eh?

I feel so detached from the real world and my regular routine, it is not a fun feeling at all.

But the good news is - my knee feels great!! YIPPEE!!

I had to hide for 2 days in my bedroom with the curtains closed, and could only come out to the rest of the house when it got darker. Like a friggin Vampire - but not the cool kind, the ugly scary kind. I am still not sure if it was the Flu, bit more than likely a side-effect from the Spinal Epidural I had. A small amount of Spinal fluid can leak and then wreaks havoc with Nausea and Killer headaches, especially when sitting up or standing. I could only lay flat without feeling like shit. Not fun. Do you know how annoying it is to have to lay still? I am so sick of laying horizontal.

Pete has been amazing - jogging with the dogs because he knows how important it is for them to remain fit - and he secretly enjoys it too, he has done all the housework, cooked for me, fed the dogs, held my hand, rubbed my feet, made me tea. I think I'll keep him.

Today is 100% better, and last night even went to friends for supper last night - and thankfully they had a nice recliner and dimmed the lights for me as the headache was still lingering :) It felt good to get out of my house. I am going a little KOO KOO for coco puffs.

Thankfully I get to look at this face all day long ... I have it pretty good.

Gyppie still can't do free running, so while I was playing ball with Kaleb poor Gyppie had to wait and watch ... but being the good Border Collie she is, she stays put in one spot ... she just enjoys barking her head off in frustration. So do I.

We'll continue rehabbing together, and we'll be back in the ring, better than ever!

Gyp has been on restricted exersize since November due to a groin pull (Psoas group of muscles), she now has the go ahead to do more extented strength and endurance exersizes and we'll see how her muscles holds up. It's been hard work, but it will all be worth it in the end.

Even with my surgery I am still able to do all her stretching, and thankfully I have the best guy in the world who takes her and Kaleb jogging everynight :)

I do my exercises 3 times a day right now, so Gyp and I do ours together - Kaleb does them too, to keep him in shape.

I feel pretty good - there is really no pain at all in my knee, it hurt worse last week before the surgery.

I was able to bend it another 4" yesterday compared to day 2. So I'm hoping in the next day or two I am able to bend it another 2 or 3".

I stopped taking the Tylenol 3s on Wednesday after barf-fest 2011. Now I am just taking Advil, and actually just Advil Cold & Sinus as I have a wicked head cold.

It was a good day yesterday, Pete's sister dropped me off an edible Arrangement made of fruit that is dipped in chocolate, presented as a bouquet .... ya I ate it all. My neighbor brought me over a fruit basket which was super nice, and Kaleb proceeded to jump at it, grabbed a Banana and high tailed it to the yard - it was classic Kaleb. I think I must stink because my mom brought me some new lounging clothes, apparently wearing the same thing for 3 days isn't a good thing?? I like visitors .... it makes the days go much quicker.

Well back to the couch I go - today I am getting back to some work - which I am actually looking forward too, now that I have my brain function MOSTLY back.

Yesterday was spent like this ... ( today is pretty much the same)

last night we took off my bandages to see what was underneath

... drum roll please

it'll be nice to see my knee cap again one day ...

there are 4 incisions - not the 3 I was hoping for. I'm thinking he wasn't able to get at the area where the tear was so the 4th medial incision was made, it is right in the spot were the majority of the locking and pain came from, here's hoping it helps.

This morning I resumed my physio routine

... and it's a good thing I have such a supportive and loving coach.

Surgery Day

I have to thank all of my great friends and family who called, sent me emails for extra support - the bottles of wine and flowers were nice touches too, you know who you are :). You have no idea how much easier it made it for me. I am lucky to have such a big support group of Family and Friends, it makes life so much easier. I have an army of nurses and friends who have been through similar things, so by the time I went there, I knew what to expect.

The nurse came to check my vitals, and I was so calm that the Nurse asked if my heart rate was naturally so low. And that was before I took an Ativan LOL. I honestly put my mind in the same state I do when running Agility at a big event - there was no turning back. I was freakishly calm.

I have a goal - I don't want to be in Pain anymore. Poor Pete had to listen to my songs on the way to the Hospital but he was so great. He held my hand the whole time. I use humour as a coping mechanism, and I am glad to say I had the Staff laughing :)

Dr. A came in and signed my leg, couldn't figure out what "SLA" meant. I thought it meant "Stupid Leg Attached", but I figured out it was his initials...

You have no idea how many fears I conquered yesterday:

- I got my first IV (and it didn't hurt and I didn't cry)

- I didn't faint at all when the Surgeon came it to talk about what he was doing

- I didn't faint when the Anesthetist talked about the options for my sedation

- I chose to go for the Spinal and took a needle to my back (so I was numb from the lower back down) ... boy I could use a tan.

- AND you won't believe this ... I watched my surgery! It was cool to see the inside of my knee and see my Meniscus just hanging there, my altered Drug induced state made it possible for me not to panic.

The deed all done.

The Surgeon said he was very surprised at how much my leg moves laterally, and he is surprised that my leg doesn't give out on me more. He's never able to get a good feel for it when I'm awake - as I have the Art of guarding down to a science. So when I meet with him in 2 weeks, we will be discussing further surgeries, and I am OK with that. Well at least I think I am, could be these wicked painkillers not making me think straight however.

My Therapy dogs helping me stay sane while I'm having to rest.

Also never out of reach are Ice Packs (icing every 30min) and Tylenol 3s, I'm poppin' those bad boys every 4 hours.

The beautiful flowers a friend sent over, I was greeted with them when I got home.

I'm now on the road to rehab, and I am looking forward to the Journey. I will be better, faster and stronger than ever. Look out, here I come!

I hope when I'm 63 I can still run like that :)

I go in for knee surgery this week, so I am cherishing my last few days of running with the dogs, and looking forward to when I can go "balls to the wall" again, as they say :)
